A study conducted in Ijaci, southern region of Minas Gerais State [Brazil] during 1987 and 1988 growing seasons, compared three dry bean (P. vulgaris L.) cultivars in three planting systems with sugarcane (S. officinarum L.). The planting systems were: two dry bean rows spaced 25 or 40 cm from a sugar cane row, one dry bean row planted in between two sugar cane rows, combined with three dry bean cultivars (Carioca 80, Rio Vermelho, and Eriparsa 1). A control treatment, with sugarcane (cv. SP 701143) alone had rows spaced 1.3 m. Experimental design was a randomized complete blocks in a factorial arrangement (3 .times. 3) with four replications. Higher sugarcane yields were achieved with beans and sugarcane intercropped. However, under favorable weather conditions for dry beans development the dry beans may affect the sugarcane at the tillering stage due to faster dry bean growth. There was no difference in dry bean cultivars over sugarcane yields.
