Dry matter yield of sweet sorghum sorghum bicolor l. moench and nutrient absorption by this plant in an oxisol

A field experiment was carried out on an oxisol at the Farm of the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", in the Municipality of Piracicaba, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to study some aspects of sweet sorghum growth. Geographically, Piracicaba is located between 22.degree. 28' of south latitude and 47.degree. 35' of west longitude. The cv. Brandes was grown in a population of 10 plants per meter in rows 0,70 m apart. Plots were fertilized with 80 kg/ha of N as urea (1/3 at seeding and 2/3 at 30 days after seeding), 100 kg/ha of P2O5 as simple superphosphate and 70 kg/ha of K2O as potassium chloride. After emergence, plant samples were taken every fourteen days until 98 days to determine the dry matter production and the nutrient contents of the shoots. The results showed higher increases in the dry matter production between 50 and 70 days after emergence and higher accumulation of nutrients between 80 and 90 days, in the following decreasing sequence: N > K > Ca > Mg > S > P > Fe > Mn > Zn > B > > Cu.
