The effect of plant number (20-120 .cntdot. 103 piece .cntdot. ha-1) on leaf area index (LAI), leaf area duration (LAD) and leaf area rate (LAR) of maize hybrids NK PX 9283 (370) SC and Pioneer hybrid 3732 (450) SC was tested by the method of growth analysis. The effect of plant number on seasonal dynamics of leaf area index (LAI) of the tested maize hybrids has been determined (Figure 2.). The logistic function fitted to the various rates of LAI growth (until having reached LAImax has characterized well the changing in growth rate in function of the number of plants (Table 1.). Studying the correlation between the plant number and LAI it was stated that the LAI value grows linearly with the increase of plant numbers (figure 3.). The change in LAI according to linear function in the various stages of development of maize plant (by sampling) may be well characterized by the slope, i.e. by the regression co-efficient "b". On the effect of the plant number the maximum leaf area by crop has been decreased but the maximum values of leaf are index (LAI) have shown linear increase (Table 2.). The LAI maximum value at plant number 80 .cntdot. 103 piece .cntdot. ha-1 has varied between 4,27 and 5,21 m2 .cntdot. m-2. The effect of plant number of leaf area duration (LAD) was characterized by LAD values calculated in two ways (on the basis of leaf area and of LAI) (Table 3.). On one hand the leaf area rate (LAR) has been evenly decreased during the development of maize plant, on the other hand the growth of the plant number resulted in the consistent increase of LAR (Figure 4.). It was concluded that in the first place the specific leaf area (SLA) is responsible for the increase of LAR due to the effect of plant number, to this later on also the leaf volume rate (LWR) contributed.
