The composition of volatile N-containing bases discharged into culture medium by blue-green algae Microcystis aeruginosa and green algae Scenedesmus acuminatus and Ankistrodesmus fusiformis during the logarithmic (5, 14 and 26 days) and stationary (40 days) growth phase was analysed by gas chromatography. For each species of algae 27-32 volatile amines have been found, 18-24 of them have been identified. It has been shown that the composition of N-containing bases depends on the stage of growth and the species of algae. The nitrite nitrogen content in the culture mediums was studied too, because nitrites and amines are possible precursors of carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds.
