Ecological studies on schistosomes snails in sana'a region yemen i. effect of rainfall temperature aquatic plants and oxygen water content on the population density of snails

During a period of 12 months, the variations in population density of Bulinus truncatus and Biomphalaria arabica, the snail intermediate hosts of urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis were studied in three different ponds in Sana's region, Yemen Arab Republic in relation to rainfall, temperature, aquatic plants and water oxygen content. High densities of B. arabica were recorded in May and June whereas for B. truncatus were recorded in June. Results revealed that rainfall accompanied with moderate water temperature (24-26.degree. C) stimulated reproduction and increased smail population. During the rainy season aquatic plants increased the water oxygen content which initiate snails productivity and hence played a role in increasing the population density. Naturally infected snails were not found in the surveyed ponds either during cold or hot seasons.
