Ecology of seed germination of the chenopod shrub haloxylon salicornicum

The influence of various environment factors viz. temperature, light, moisture and salinity levels on seed germination of Haloxylon salicornicum were investigated. Seeds were kept in glass petridishes and four replications were taken. From 10 to 30.degree. C the germaination was in increasing order and at 40.degree. C it was slightly reduced. The germination response was equally good in both light and in dark. Increase in moisture stress and levels of salinity shows adverse effect on rate as well as percentage germination. Various chemicals viz. sodium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium sulphate, magensium sulphate and sodium bicarbonate do not inhibit germination equally. Maximum decline was observed in the seeds germinated in solutions of magnesium sulphate and sodium bicarbonate.
