Effect of additional feeding concentrate feed on fattening young bulls on corn silage

A performance experiment was conducted with 3 groups, each of 10 young bulls (5 young bulls of the Bulgarian Brown cattle and 5 Bulgarian Brown cattle .times. Simmental F1 crossbreds, equalized according to the method of the analogues. The animals were fattened from ca. 250 kg to more than 550 live weight. The young bulls were fattened ad libitum on corn silage to which grond corn was added. The ratio of corn to ground corn dry matter of group 1, group 2, and group 3 was 96,6:3.4, 76:24, and 50:5:49,5; however, in view of the grain content of silage those ratios should read as follows 80:20, 53:37, and 32:58, respectively. For balancing the diets in protein, minerals, and vitamins a specially prepared supplement was used for each group. It was found that feeding young bulls ad libitum finely chopped (particle size under 20 mm) corn silage of 34% dry matter and consisting in 17.3% grains, supplemented with nonprotein nitrogen compounds, minerals and vitamins, practically with no concentrate feed, daily gain in weight was unsatisfactory - under 800 g. A marked increase in daily gain (above 1050 g), and utilization of feed was obtained on daily supplement of corn silage with 2 kg ground corn. A further increase of concentrate (above 4 kg) did not better daily grain considerably nor improve utilization of feed. In that case corn silage intake decreased markedly on account of the concentrate, grain loss with faeces was on the increase as well as lessening in digestibility of feed, moreover, more fat was deposited on viscera and in carcass.
