Effect of cowpea and maize plus cowpea intercropping on nitrogen uptake by succeeding maize and wheat crops

The effect of cowpea and maize + cowpea intercropping on N uptake by succeeding maize and wheat crops was studied in greenhouse and field experiments. The contribution of different sources of nitrogen, namely, soil, freshly applied fertilizer and residual fertilizer to the total N uptake by maize and wheat was evaluated using 15N and the contribution of crop residues was computed by the difference. The yield of succeeding crops increased significantly in pots/plots where, in first phase, cowpea alone or cowpea intercropped with maize was grown as compared to those with maize alone. There was increase in N content of succeeding crops and also increased total N uptake after pure and intercropped cowpea compared to after pure cropped maize. The N contribution of cowpea residues was 20.4 and 39.3 per cent to the total N uptake by wheat under field conditions and under greenhouse conditions 11.0 to 27.1 and 19.0 to 44.6 per cent after intercropped and pure cropped cowpea respectively. The contribution of sole cowpea to N uptake by residual crops was nearly double than observed under intercropping.
