Effect of dates of sowing varieties and the incidence of insect pests on the quality of fodder cowpea vigna unguiculata l. walp

The qualitative value of cowpea in relation to insect damage on crops sown on different dates was determined. The cowpea crop sown on July 1 yielded maximum per cent of crude protein and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) which appear to be related with least damaging intensity of leaf hoppers and defoliators while the late sowing yielded poor performance. Among the three varieties, IGFRI-450 exhibited maximum per cent of crude protein and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and lowest per cent of in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). This indicated they IGFRI-450 was resistant to incidence of leaf hoppers/defoliators while Bharati local was susceptible to insect damage since it had higher value of IVDMD.
