Effect of depth and frequency of irrigation on performance of wheat grown on a sodic typic chromustert

A split plot experiment was conducted to assess the performance of wheat grown on a moderately sodic clay soil (montmorillonitic, hyperthermic family of Typic Chromusterts) as influenced by depth and frequency of irrigation based on irrigation water: cumulative pan evaporation (IW/CPE) ratio. The treatment consisted of IW/CPE ratio of 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2. Four irrigation depths, viz., 30, 50, 70 and 90 mm were used as sub-treatments. The highest grain yield was obtained at IW/CPE ratio of 1.2 with 30 to 50 mm water per irrigation. The pre-irrigation soil water potential was the highest in plots under irrigation based on IW/CPE of 1.2 and it decreased as the number of irrigations were reduced and quantity of irrigation water was increased. Based on two years crop performance, it is concluded that the irrigation schedule for wheat growtn on moderately sodic clay soil should be based on IW/CPE of 1.2 with depth of water per irrigation as 50 mm.
