Effect of different tillage implements on the production of wheat crop under low rainfall condition of dera ismail khan

The effect of deep tillage as moisture conservation technique on the yield of wheat crop was studied on two different sites-one at Arid Zone Research Farm and the other On Farmer's land at Zandani, Dera Ismail Khan [Pakistan] under rainfed condition during Rabi 1988-89. Four tillage treatments applied prior to monsoon rains were; springtined cultivator (control); mould board plough; disc plough and chisel plough. The results indicated that deep tillage had non-significant effect on plant height, number of tillers/m2 and straw yield at both the sites. However, it increased the 1000 grain weight and grain yield significantly. The mouldboard plough, disc plough and chisel performed at a par statistically. However, the highest grain yield of 2830 and 4100 kg/ha were obtained with the application of mould board plough at the Arid Zone Research Farm and Farmer's field respectively.
