Effect of differentiated nitrogen fertilization in autumn on soil plant available nitrogen content at the beginning of the growing season and on yields and nitrogen extraction in winter wheat comparison with differentiated nitrogen fertilization in spring

From 1981 to 1985, field trials were conducted at three locations to study the effect of differentiated N fertilization (urea) in autumn and in spring on N uptake and N utilization by winter wheat. The nitrate and nitrate + ammonium N contents varied in dependence on not only soil and year but also rate and time of N fertilization in autumn. Even at low nitrogen losses, autumn fertilization was inferior to fertilization in spring. In the mean of all experiments, N fertilization in spring gave 1 t .cntdot. ha-1 and 0.3 t .cntdot. ha-1 higher grain yields than equal applications in September and November, respectively. Application of 160 kg N .cntdot. ha-1 in spring (at three split rates of 80/40/40 for ZADOKS 11/32/47 led, on average, to highest yields and N uptake rates. On eluvial soils, rates of 120/0 and 80/40 kg N per hectare produced equal effects.
