From 1981 to 1985, field trials were conducted at three locations to study the effect of differentiated N fertilization (urea) in autumn and in spring on N uptake and N utilization by winter wheat. The nitrate and nitrate + ammonium N contents varied in dependence on not only soil and year but also rate and time of N fertilization in autumn. Even at low nitrogen losses, autumn fertilization was inferior to fertilization in spring. In the mean of all experiments, N fertilization in spring gave 1 t .cntdot. ha-1 and 0.3 t .cntdot. ha-1 higher grain yields than equal applications in September and November, respectively. Application of 160 kg N .cntdot. ha-1 in spring (at three split rates of 80/40/40 for ZADOKS 11/32/47 led, on average, to highest yields and N uptake rates. On eluvial soils, rates of 120/0 and 80/40 kg N per hectare produced equal effects.
