Effect of feeding urea treated wheat straw on milk production and milk composition

Effect of feeding urea treated wheat straw on milk production and milk composition

Sarhad Journal of Agriculture 7(3): 315-320

Feeding of urea-treated wheat straw was compared with that of untreated wheat straw on the basis of milk production and milk composition in eight lactating Sahiwal cows. The cows were obtained from the private farmers and were randomly divided into two groups of 4 each. The cows fed on urea-treated wheat straw showed significantly (P < 0.01) higher straw consumption (6.65 .+-. 0.25 vs. 3.42 .+-. 0.08) and lower green fodder (18.05 .+-. 0.50 vs. 24.11 .+-. 0.19) as compared to cows fed untreated wheat straw. The statistical analysis of the data revealed non-significant differences in the milk production (6.39 .+-. 0.26 vs. 5.55 .+-. 0.33 Kg) and milk composition. The cost of milk production per Kg. was Rs. 2.02 and 1.88 for the untreated and treated wheat straw groups, respectively. The results of the present study suggested that feeding urea treated wheat straw may be practised for dairy animals particularly during periods of green fodder scarcity without negatively affecting the milk yield.
