Effect of fistulation diet and climate on dry matter and water intake in crossbred steer 7 8 and 1 2 holstein zebu 1 2 holstein zebu and 7 8 zebu holstein

This experiment was conducted at the Animal Housing facilities at the Universidade Federal de Vicosa, UFV. Three genetic groups were utilized as follows: five 7/8 Holstein and 1/8 Zebu (HZ); five 1/2 Holstein and 1/2 Zebu (HZ), five 7/8 Zebu and 1/8 Holstein (ZH). In order to test the influence of the fistulation and the digestion collection in the ilium and abomasum have on the dry matter consumption and water consumption on a maintenance level for these animals in total confinement. Two rations were used: A(60:40) and B(40:60) bulk: concentrate. The gross protein level for the rations using 16% dry matter, temperature variation between 16.8 and 22.9 degrees Centigrate, and relative humidity between 57.2 and 88.7%. The fistulation effect did not reduce the dry matter consumption nor the water consumption (P < 0.05). The steers dry matter consumption (1/2 HZ and 7/8 HZ) were similar, however, the 7/8 ZH had a more elevated dry matter consumption then the 1/2 HZ (P < 0.05).
