Effect of gamma rays on the radiosensitivity and mutability of soybean cultivars

Dry seeds of six soybean cultivars were irradiated with gamma-rays in doses, 5, 7.5, 10 and 15 krad. The cultivars tested manifested different resistance to gamma-irradiation. Most sensitive were the cultivars Scuntea and S-2596. Cv. Zarya had considerably higher radioresistance than the remaining cultivars. The dose 15 krad proved to be most suitable for the induction of inherited useful changes. The cultivars tested manifested different inclination to mutate. Cvs Scuntea, S-137 and S-2596 were distinguished by highest mutability. Mutant soybean forms were selected which are of interest for combinative breeding.
