Effect of growth rate in heifers of dapple red lowland breed on their future body weight milk production and fertility

Effect of growth rate in heifers of dapple red lowland breed on their future body weight milk production and fertility

Archiv fuer Tierzucht 33(3): 255-260

Studies were made with 208 heifers of Dapple red lowland breed at Glogovek state breeding centre in Opole voivodeship (Poland). The heifers were weighed after birth, at the age of 18th months, 10 days before and 100, 200 and 300 days after calving. The effect was investigated of daily weight gains in the preweaning period until the 18th month of age on body weight after first calving, first-lactation milk yield and fertility. With the view to their daily weight gains, heifers were subdivided into three groups: up to 650 g, from 651 to 750 g and more than 750 g. Growth rate and body weight in heifers of the currently selected Dapple red low-land cattle had no effect on milk and fat yields in the first lactation. Weight losses after calving averaged 67.8 kg (11.5%), while subsequent weight gains during lactation averaged 69.3 kg (13,3%). High milk yields were, as a tendency, associated with greater weight losses after calving and lower weight gain rates during lactation, longer calving intervals and lower fertility results.
