A field experiment was conducted during 1986-87 and 1987-88 on sandy-loam calcareous soil of Pusa to study the effect of irrigation and nitrogen on spring-planted sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.). Among irrigation levels, maximum cane yield (74.38 tonnes/ha) and sugar yield (7.6 tonnes/ha) were recorded at irrigation water depth : cumulative pan evaporation ratio (IW: CPE) of 0.8 with 6 irrigations, each having a depth of 6 cm. Response to N was recorded up to 180 kg/ha for cane yield (77.54 tonnes/ha) and sugar yield (8.0 tonnes/ha). Water-use efficiency was higher toward drier regimes and with higher levels of N. The major part of soil moisture (61.6-80.2%) was utilized by the crop from 0-60 cm soil layer and the minimum from 90-120 cm. Total N uptake was higher in IW : CPE ratio of 0.8 and at 180 kg N/ha due to bigger sink size.
