Effect of irrigation methods on yield potential of chickpea cicer arietinum in a rice oryza sativa based cropping system

A field experiment was conducted during 1982-84 to find out the effect of irrigation methods on yield potential of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in a rice (Oryza sativa L.)- based cropping system on clay soil. Irrigation channel spaced at 1.20 and 1.60 m produced 32 and 31% higher grain yield than open-field flood irrigation and were on a par with 0.80 m spacing. Grain yield decreased when channel space of 2.0 m distance was used for irrigation. Open-flood irrigation required more quantity of water (14.5 cm) than channel distance of 1.20 m (13 cm water). Increase in the distance of channels to 2 m width decreased the water requirement of the crop, but water-use efficiency was lower when compared with irrigation applied in 1.20 m-spaced channel.
