Effect of male type on fruit setting yield and fruit physical properties in some date palm cultivars

This investigation was carried out in 1985 and 1986 seasons at the College of Agriculture, King Saud University [Saudi Arabia] to study the metaxenic effects of 16 date palm males used in pollination. These males were evaluated and selected to raise the standard male cvs for pollination in the Central Region. Four date palm cultivars were used namely; Seleg, Sakhi, Khudari and Nebut Seif. Results showed that the pollen grains of the 16 date palm males, under investigation, have metaxenic effects on fruit setting, yield and fruit physical properties (weight, size, length, diameter and seed weight) in the 4 cultivars under study. These metaxenic effects were found to differ from one year to another, not only within male used but also within female cultivars.
