Effect of nitrification inhibitors on heterotrophic microorganisms in soddy podzolic soils

Nonspecific activity of a number of nitrification inhibitors (carbamoil-methylprazol - CMP, dicyandiamid - DCDA, aminotriazol - ATG) as related to soil heterotrophic microorganisms was studied. The CMP was found to be characterized by the highest nonspecific activity. Application of this inhibitor at commonly used doses results in changes in dominant species proportion in the assemblage of soil microorganisms and in the increase of the quota of phytotoxic strains of micromycetes. The DCDA effect becomes evident when it is applied at doses which are several times as much as those commonly used in agricultural practice. The ATG is characterized by the lowest nonspecific activity. Its influence on soil heterotrophic microorganism is essential when the ATG is added in amounts exceeding common doses by 2-3 orders. Thus the effect of the ATG on autotrophic nitrificators seems to be highly selective and this inhibitor can be recommended as ecologically preferable.
