Effect of nitrogen fertilisation and foliar application of calcium and micro elements on cotton seed yield viability and seedling vigor

Studies were conducted in 1981 and 1982 at Giza Agricultural Research Center (ARC), Egypt, on Egyptian cotton, cultivar 'Giza 75', (Gossypium barbadense L.), on the effects of nitrogen rate (108 or 216 kg N/ha); the chelated form of calcium (Ca at 50 mg/litre); and five microelements (Cu, Zn or Co at 12.5 mg/litre; Fe or Mn at 25 mg/litre, all applied three times as foliar spray at 70, 85 and 100 days after planting) on seed yield, viability, and seedling vigour. A randomised complete block design with four replications was used. Seed yield/plant, seed viability (germination velocity, second germination count and total germination capacity) and seedling vigour (length of hypocotyl, radicle and entire seedling; and seedling fresh and dry weights) increased with increasing N rate and application of Ca, Cu, Zn, Fe or Mn. Seed index increased with increasing N rate in 1981 and 1982, and with application of Cu, Fe or Mn in 1982. A significant increase in length of hypocotyl and entire seedling was found in 1981 due to Co application. N rate, Ca and micro-elements showed no significant effect on germination rate index in 1981 or 1982.
