Effect of rearing generation and extract of host plant on the oviposition of beet armyworm spodoptera exigua huebner lepidoptera noctuidae

Effect of rearing generation and extract of host plants on the oviposition of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, was observed for 10 consecutive generation in the insectary (25.degree. C, 16L : 8D). Hatchability, pupation and adult emergence was not affected until 5 generations. However, pupal weights begin to decrease from the 2nd generation and the weight in the 5th generation was 92.4mg in female and 87.5mg in male compared with 102.7mg in female and 110.4mg in male. The total number of egg per female was 1050.3 in the 1st generation, 441.1 in the 5th, and 323.0 in the 10th. In the 10th, only 56% of females laid eggs. When the extracts of host plants were treated on the egg-laying oil paper, the numbers of eggs laid increased especially in the extracts of scallion by diethylether.
