Effect of sources and methods of nitrogen application on yield and nitrogen uptake of potato solanum tuberosum in meghalaya

A field experiment was conducted during the summer seasons of 1985-87 with 3 sources of N (ammonium sulphate, calcium ammonium nitrate and urea), applied through different methods. Ammonium sulphate and calcium ammonium nitrate gave significantly higher yield (21.3 and 20.6 tonnes/ha respectively) than urea (19.2 tonnes/ha) in 'Kufri Joyti' potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Urea was on a par with other N sources when applied by broadcast or 5 cm from the seed tubers, but gave signficantly lower tuber yield than when applied 5 cm below or above the seed tubers. Application of fertilizer N 5 cm above or below the seed tubers proved superior to its application 5 cm away from the seed tubers in band or broadcast. The increase in the tuber yield was owing to increase in tuber weight in large (> 75 g) and medium grades (25-75 g). Maximum N uptake (111.5 kg N/ha) was found when ammonium sulphate was applied 5 cm below the seed tubers.
