The effect of early (November) and late (January) sowing, and the application fo carbofuran (5% G, 20 kg/ha) and fertilizer on nodule damage by Sitona crinitus and yield of lentil was studied between 1986 and 1989 in on-farm trials at several locations differing in rainfall in northern Syria. In all years, nodule damage was significantly higher in early-sown (42 to 75% damage) than in late-sown lentils (24 to 34% damage). Yield increased in early sowing. Carbofuran application significantly reduced nodule damage and increased lentil grain and straw yield up to 21 and 27%, respectively. Yield increases due to carbofuran application were generally higher in early than in latw sown crop except in a season with > 390 mm rainfall, when the increases in both dates were similar. Yield increases due to Sitona control were related to % nodule damage in the absence of carbofuran. The percentage of total nodules damaged (y) showed a curvilinear relationship with the total seasonal precipitation (mm) (x) described by the equation y = 206.02-0.79921x + 0.00094x2 (R2 = 0.73). Application of 50 kg/ha N along with 50 kg/ha P2O5 did not affect nodulation, nodule damage and seed yield but increased biological yield significantly.
