Effect of the sowing date on wheat growth yield components and yield in the mugamba area burundi

The effect of the sowing date on the growth, yield components, and yield of a second season wheat crop was studied in a series of 13 trials established in 1985 in fields cultivated in the natural region of Mugamba, Burundi. Results led to recommend early sowing. The decline of late sowing production.sbd.which can reach 40%.sbd.was due either to water stress or to the effect of both water stress and yellow rust depending on the wheat growing area. Water stress reduced plant height and straw weight/m2. Its effect on yield resulted in a more or less significant decrease in grain number/head and 1000 grain weight on the different trial sites. Yellow rust, more severe in late sown crops, affected significantly 1000 grain weight.
