Effect of the term of mowing on yield and quality of forage obtained of some cultivars and hybrids of sugar sorghum

In 1985-1987 at the Experimental Station of Variety Testing the productive capacities and the effect of the term of mowing on the yield and quality of forage of some cultivars and hybrids of sugar sorghum and grass sorghum hybrid, were investigated. Experiments were carried out on typical chernozem, after winter barley predecessor and N140P70K80 dressing. Sowing was performed on soil heated up to 12.degree. C using 80 germinable seeds/m2 at interrow distance of 30 cm. In the first experiment mowing was carried out in the phase of milky-wax ripeness of grains, and in the second one-in the beginning of tasseling. It was found that the conditions of the region were suitable for growing sorghum and grass sorghum hybrids, and for obtaining high yields. The highest yield of green mass and dry matter upon harvesting in the phase of milky-wax ripeness of grain (for silage) was obtained from Pridonskoi 1 hybrid, i.e. 96 712.5 and 23 523.4 kg/ha, respectively. Upon harvesting for obtaining green mass (in the beginning of tasseling) the highest was the yield of Yubileinui-124 691.7 kg/ha, and the greatest amount of dry matter gave the Troudeks cultivar sorghum Troudeks cultivar grass sorghum. When sugar sorghum was harvested in the beginning of tasseling, they yield of green mass is considerably higher than upon harvesting in the phase of milky-wave ripeness. The dry matter was of great amount upon green mass harvesting and only with Pridonskoi 1 hybrid it was insignificantly higher upon gathering for silage.
