Effect of tricyclazole and pyroquilon on myceliogenic germination of sclerotia of sclerotinia sclerotiorum sclerotinia minor sclerotinia trifoliorum and sclerotinia sp

Effects of the melanin inhibitors, tricyclazole and pyroquilon, on colony growth, sclerotial color and sclerotial germination were investigated using Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, S. minor, S. trifoliorum and Sclerotinia sp. Tricyclazole and pyroquilon reduced the growth rate of S. sclerotiorum and S. minor at 100 to 200 mg/L but they did not prevent the formation of sclerotia in all four species at 100 mg/L. Where as the color of sclerotia from PDA cultures changed from white (primordia) to light greyish brown, greyish black and then black, the color of sclerotia from tricyclazole or pyroquilon-amended cultures changed from white (primordia) to light brown, dark brown and then black. Although most of the black sclerotia from PDA cultures were dormant, all the brown sclerotia and most of the black sclerotia from tricyclazole or pyroquilon-amended cultures were capable of undergoing myceliogenic germination on moist sand and the germination was characteristic of the hyphal type. The role of tricyclazole and pyroquilon on dormancy of sclerotia of S. sclerotiorum, S. minor, S. trifoliorum and Sclerotinia sp. is discussed.
