Effect of unilateral castration on the contralateral testis in the garden lizard calotes versicolor during regression and recrudescence phase of the reproductive cycle

The effect of unilateral castration on the contralateral testis and accessory reproductive organs during the regression and the recrudescence phase of the reproductive cycle is investigated in the garden lizard, Calotes versicolor. Unilateral castration during the regression phase had no effect on the testis, epididymis and renal sexual segment while during recrudescence phase, it caused stimulation of the testis (i) in terms of weight (ii) spermatogenesis and (iii) the Leydig cells, and also of the epididymis and renal sexual segment. The present study reveals that the responsiveness of the remaining testis to unilateral castration in C. versicolor depends upon the phase of the reproductive cycle.
