Effect of uterine massage associated to short term calf removal on reproductive performance in primiparous beef cows

Effect of uterine massage associated to short term calf removal on reproductive performance in primiparous beef cows

Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinaria e Zootecnia 44(1): 17-27

The effects of uterine massage, short-term calf removal and stress management on reproductive performance were evaluated in 113 primiparous Nelore cows. In TI (control; n = 23) the cows were kept in pasture and naturally nursed their calves during the 120 days of experimental phase. In TII (n = 23) the cows received uterine massage (30 seconds) each 30 days and naturally nursed their calves. In TIII (n = 23) the calves were removed for 36 hours, at 30-day intervals. In TIV (n = 22) the cows received uterine massage as described in TII and short-term calf removal as in TIII. In TV (n = 22) the cows received the stress of being held in the chute during 30 seconds at 30-day periods and naturally nursed their calves during all the trial. Periods from calving to first detected heat and from calving to conception were: 92 .+-. 28 and 100 .+-. 28, 102 .+-. 34 and 105 .+-. 25, 92 .+-. 34 and 100 .+-. 30, 81 .+-. 28 and 100 .+-. 30, 96 .+-. 16 and 114 .+-. 12 days for groups TI to TV, respectively. The weights at beginning and at the end of the experimental phase were, 314 .+-. 15 and 379 .+-. 17, 321 .+-. 12, and 390 .+-. 14, 327 .+-. 18 and 396 .+-. 18, 309 .+-. 16 and 389 .+-. 17, 310 .+-. 15 and 387 .+-. 16 kg for the cows and 57, 5 .+-. 13 and 160 .+-. 14, 58 .+-. 15 and 159 .+-. 13, 59 .+-. 4 and 161 .+-. 4, 57 .+-. 16 and 160 .+-. 15, 58 .+-. 17 and 163 .+-. 17 kg for the calves in treatments I to V, respectively. The percent of cows presenting heat and pregnancy rate were 52.2 and 47.8 and 34.8, 43.5 and 39.1, 40.9 and 36.4, 40.9 and 31.8%, for TI to TV respectively. It was not observed any effect of treatments on evaluated parameters, except for cow and calf weights at the beginning and at the end of the experimental phase.
