Effect of varying intervals of starvation on perioperative blood glucose levels

Blood glucose levels were measured in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative period in 90 children, aged 6 months to 8 years undergoing elective surgery. Of these 30 were outdoor patients fasted overnight. Of the indoor patients, 30 were fasted overnight and then other 30 were given a milk feed 6 hours preoperatively. Only 2 out of 90 children had a blood glucose level less than 40 mg/100 ml. There was no difference in the blood glucose levels between indoor and outdoor patients. To minimize the risk of gastric acid aspiration, it is recommended that children older than 6 months should be starved overnight.
