Effects of light intensity on the growth of gametophytes and on the growth of juvenile sporophytes of eisenia bicyclis and ecklonia cava laminariales phaeophyta

Since 1986, our laboratory has started the study of marine macrophyte beds creation. Light intensity is important factor for the macrophyte growth. Therefore, we investigated the effects of light intensity on teh growth of two developmental stages of Eisenia bicyclis and Ecklonia cava (Laminariales, Phaeophyta). Gametophytes and juvenile sporophytes (length 5.apprx.10 mm) of two species were cultured for 20 days under the conditions as follows: water temperature 20 .+-. 0, 5.degree. C; light intensity 0, 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1300 (sporophytes: 0 to 800) .mu.E .cntdot. m-2 .cntdot. sec-1 (abbreviated to .mu.E); photoperiod 12/12 hr; Tatewaki's ESI medium. Survival rate, cell numbers, area of gametopytes and area of sporophytes were measured. As to growth, both species showed a similar reaction to light. The gametophytes showed maximum grwoth at 100 .mu.E and growth rate reduced at more than 200 .mu.E. On the other hand, the sporophytes showed maximum growth at 400 .mu.E, indicating a greater light demand than gametophytes.
