A field experiment was conducted on a Typic Haplorthox found in Jaboticabal (SP), Brazil, to study the effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers in sweet sorghum. The experimental design was a factorial 32 in randomized blocks, with combinations of three nitrogen rates (0-50-100 kg/ha N) and three potassium rates (0-50-100 kg/ha K2O). Ammonium nitrate and potassium chloride were used as nitrogen and potassium sources. Highly significant responses were obtained for stalk and ethanol (l/ha) yield with nitrogen and potassium fertilizers. The highest production of stalk was obtained with 81 kg/ha N in the presence of 50 kg/ha K2O. On the other hand, all levels of nitrogen together with potassium at the level of 100 kg/ha K2O induced yields always lower than with the rate of 50 kg/ha K2O. Leaves +3 and +4 collected during the growing stage (45 days) and during flowering (90 days) proved to be adequate for the diagnosis of nitrogen and potassium nutrition. Among the macro and micronutrients analysed in the leaves, an increase in Mn and Zn concentrations was observed in relation to nitrogen fertilization, whereas potassium fertilizers reduced the Ca content.
