Effects of preharvest spray with gibberellin on the maturation and postharvest freshness of peach fruits

Effects of preharvest spray with gibberellin on the maturation and postharvest freshness of peach fruits

Seoul National University Journal of Agricultural Sciences 13(1): 27-34

In order to find out the effect of gibberellin application on delaying the harvest and keeping the freshness after picking of peaches, GA, Ethephon, and GA + Ethephon were sprayed on fruit surface or leaves one and two weeks before the date of expected harvest. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Fruit length, diameter, and weight were not significantly different in any of the treatments from those of the control. 2. Fruit firmness was significantly increased when GA was sprayed on the fruits 2 weeks before harvest, while the Ethephon spray lowered firmness. 3. Soluble solids were not decreased by the GA application. 4. Acidity became a little higher by the GA application 2 weeks before harvest as compared with that of control. 5. chlorophyll content was significantly increased by the GA application on the fruits 2 weeks before harvest, and increasing effect of GA was removed by the simultaneous spray of Ethephon. 6. In respiration, Ethephon application alone was the highest, GA plus Ethephon was higher than control and GA alone. 7. Considering the above mentioned effects on fruit firmness and total chlorophyll content, it would be possible to conclude that GA spray on fruit surface 2 weeks before harvest be an adaptable means for delaying the harvest and keeping the freshness of picked fruits for a longer period.
