Effects of seasonal clipping on brachiaria decumbens stapf seed production

The experiment was conducted with the objective of studying the effect of number and seasonal clippings on the components of seed production of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. A randomized block design with four treatments (Control; plants cutted in December; plants cutted in December and February; plants cutted in December, February and March) was used. Simple linear correlation coefficients were determined between total non-structural carbohydrates contents of root and stem bases, number of inflorescences per area, sprout percentage, and number of ears per bunch. The results showed that cutting in December did not influence the number of inflorescences per unit of area. However, cutting in December and February or in December, February and March drastically reduced the number of inflorescences. There was not significative effects of cutting on the sprout percentage and number of ears per bunch. Total nonstructural carbohydrate levels of roots and stem bases seemed not to have influenced the number of inflorescence, percentage of sprout and number of ears per bunch.
