Effects of temperature on the development of beet armyworm spodoptera exigua huebner lepidoptera noctuidae

The beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua) was reared on the artificial diet of common cutworm Spodoptera litura to know the effects of temperature on the development. Larval periods were 10.5, 17.3 and 32.2 days at 30.degree. C, 25.degree. C and 20.degree. C, respectively. Larval mortality was increases at higher temperature, but no pupae was obtained at 15.degree. C. Preoviposition periods at high temperature were shorter than that at low temperature. Development thresholds were estimated to be 13.2, 15.4 and 15.4 for the egg, larva, and pupa, resectively. Degree-day (DD) accumulations of 37.2, 155.8, 78.5 and 271.0 were required for the completion of the egg, larval, and pupal stages, and egg to adult, respectively.
