Effects of three host plants on the development of beet armyworm spodoptera exigua huebner lepidoptera noctuidae

The beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua (Hubner) (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae), a major pest of various vegetables in Korea, was reared on fresh Welsh onion, Chinese cabbage and soybean leaves in 25.degree. C incubator. Developmental periods of eggs, larvae and pupae were 3.3, 13 .apprx. 18, and 8 .apprx. 9 days, respectively, and the longevity of adults was 7 .apprx. 10 days. Larval and pupal periods were shortest on Chinese cabbage and longest on Welsh onion leaves. Pupal weights were the heaviest on Chinese cabbage. Average number of eggs per female was 1145.1 on Chinese cabbage, 1011.0 on soybean, and 692.0 on Welsh onion. Adult longevity was longer on Chinese cabbage and soybean than that of Welsh onion. Larval and pupal mortality was much higher by 73.7% on Welsh onion than 16.6% on Chinese cabbage. Especially mortality of the first instar larvae were reached 60% on Welsh onion. Sex ratio of reared adult was ca 1:1.
