Effects on milk protein content yield and composition of dietary changes in diets based on grass silage to dairy cows

Four feeding experiments were analysed with respect to their effect on the content and composition of protein in milk. In two experiments (A and B) the forage to concentrate ratio in the diet was changed from 65/35 to 35/65 through isoenergetic substitution of silage for rolled oats and in one of these experiments two energy levels were also fed. In the third experiment (C) a blended ensiled diet was compared with a conventional diet of grass silage and concentrates fed separately. Finally, in the fourth experiment (D) identical diets were compared fed separately or blended. In none of the four experiments did the different treatments result in any effects on total milk protein or casein content in milk. In experiment C the blended ensiled diet and a significantly higher yield of milk protein than the diet of separately fed grass silage and concentrates. It was concluded that milk protein content and composition is difficult to influence through dietary changes in diets based on grass silage.
