Endocrine events in the 3rd instar larvae of bombyx mori treated with terpenoid imidazole

Endocrinological effects of terpenoid imidazole (KK-42:1-benzyl-5-[(E)-2,6-dimethyl-1,5-heptadienyl] imidazole) functions as anti-JH anti-ecdysteroid agents, on the 3rd instar silkworm, Bombyx mori, were investigated by the ligation between head and thorax. Ligations for limited hr in untreated control resulted in non-apolysis in all larvae ligated at the 24th, 36th hr larval-pupal apolysis in about half the larvae ligated at the 48th hr and larval-larval apolysis in all larvae ligated at the 60th, 72nd hr. The decapitated individuals by ligation for limited hr after application of KK-42 did not correspond with the control, i. e., some of them ligated at the 60th, 72nd hr pupated in the same way as those ligated at the 48th hr due to lack of JH, but all individuals ligated at the 84th hr in consequence of developmental delay did not metamorphose. Moreover larval-larval apolysis of the KK-42 applied individuals was delayed for 1 .apprx. 2 days compared with the control due to delay of ecdysteroid secretion. Single application of KK-42 to the 3rd instar larvae did not make the precocious 2-molter, because KK-42 might act as anti-JH and anti-ecdysteroid agents for 2.apprx.3 days following its application, afterwards the endocrine system might recover from the agent.
