The maximum likelihood (ML) procedure outlined in Part I of this series was used to estimate the variance components for direct and maternal effects of -week weights of Large White pigs. In addition, adjustment factors were obtained for 8-week weights. Heritability estimates from unconstrained and constrained optimizations of likelihood function are 0.22 and 0.15, respectively. The estimates of genetic correlation between direct and maternal effects obtained from unconstrained and constrained optimizations are -1.36 and -1.0, respectively.
