Evaluation of some soil test methods for available sulfur in some alluvial soils

Soil test methods were evaluated for predicting response of mustard crop to sulphur application on alluvial soils. Out of the methods which correlated well with crop growth, extraction with Ca(H2PO4)2 (500 ppm P), CaCl2(0.15%), ammonium acetate, acetic acid and Morgan's reagent were found equally efficient for assessing the available sulphur status of soils, the critical levels being 12.5, 10.0, 9.0 and 8.5 ppm, respectively. Relationship between sulphur in control plants and per cent yield was also found to be significant and most of the deficient mustard plants contained less than 0.18% sulphur.
