Evaluation of the selection of gilts for breeding with respect to litter order and number of reared piglets per litter

Evaluation of the selection of gilts for breeding with respect to litter order and number of reared piglets per litter

Zivocisna Vyroba 34(9): 793-799

Investigation was performed in a set of 3097 gilts of the Prestice Black Pied breed. The gilts were classified by litter order as well as by the number of piglets reared in the litter from which the animals were chosen for breeding. Average daily weight gain from birth to the weight of 100 kg was evaluated in classes formed in this way. The data were processed by the least-squares method; this means that the values determined in the different classes were fitted by a curve. In classification according to the order of litters, this curve was characterized by the equation y - 523.6 + 7.857 x 0.928571 x2 and in classification according to the number of reared piglets by the equation y - 617.6 - 15.4817 .times. + 0.714286 x2. No influence on growth performance was found to be exerted by the order of litters nor by the number of piglets reared in the litter from which the gilts were chosen for breeding.
