Example of unexpected results during monitoring of the ammonia concentration in a piggery

Example of unexpected results during monitoring of the ammonia concentration in a piggery

Annales de Medecine Veterinaire 133(7): 613-616

Ammonia concentrations were measured in 2 compartments of a farrowing house. The 2 compartments had the same volume, the same number of animals, the same equipment of artificial ventilation and were largely in communication. It was expected that the ammonia concentrations were identical but the results were on average 12 and 21 ppm. The difference was due to a recirculation of the extracted air more in one compartment than in the other. The results show the difference between a theoretical airflow pattern and the reality; they also show the importance of a sufficient number of sensing points.
