Exchangeable potassium percentage as a measure of solution potassium in vertisols and vertic ustochrepts

Exchangeable potassium percentage as a measure of solution potassium in vertisols and vertic ustochrepts

Journal of the Indian Society of Soil Science 39(3): 452-456

Two estimates of solution potassium, viz. K in saturation extract and K in water (1:5 soil:water extract) and exchangeable potassium percentage of the exchange complex (EPP) were determined in five soil series namely, Pemberty (Vertic Ustochrept), Pithvajal (Vertic Ustochrept), Kamliakheri (Vertic Ustochrept), Sarol (Typic Chromustert), and Shendvada (Typic Chromustert), from the swell-shrink soils region of India. Water soluble K and exchangeable K were significantly correlated in all the five soil series. EPP and water soluble K were highly and positively correlated in the individual soil series and also when four or five series were pooled; EPP predicted solution K in a range of Vertisols and associated soils. Highly significant positive relationships were also observed between water soluble K and saturation extract K. Water soluble K, therefore, can be used as a means to predict saturation extract K.
