Experimental reproduction of metabolic disorders in pigs caused by consumption of protein molasses

In order to induce the clinical metabolic picture due to sugarcane molasses and torula yeast (protein molasses) consumption in fattening swine, 21 commercial crossbred (Landrace .times. Duroc .times. Yorkshire) pigs were divided in two groups and fed respectively, growth concentrate (9) and protein molasses (12). During the first month no clinical signs of interest were seen, weight gain being similar in both groups. Later molasses consumption decreased, more evident in the course of time. Pigs fed molasses disclosed high mortality in the second month and daily weight gain (316 g) was significantly lower in relation to the control group. Clinical signs comprised incoordination, locomotion disorders, asphixia and postration. Morphopathological examination revealed encephalic edema, gastric ulcers, and degeneration of heart muscle fibres. The study of metabolic indicators disclosed more important results; these findings were significantly higher glucose and lactic acid blood concentrations together with high potassium, and low zinc and sodium serum levels.
