Female genital tract infection with chlamydia trachomatis

One thousand four hundred five patients in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology were studied for Chlamydia infection by the Micro Trak and Chlamydiazyme methods. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 44 (5.3%) patients with colpitis and PID, 14 (2.9%) pregnant women, 3 (2.9%) sterile women, 1 (50%) with lymphangitis and 1 (50%) puerperant with neonatal chlamydia infection. C. trachomatis is most prevalent in women in their teens and twenties, and the asymptomatic carrier rate (42.9%) appears to be surprisingly high. C. trachomatis is the most important microorganism among the sexually transmitted diseases but may be transmitted in other ways. Two patients out of 14 pregnant women with chlamydia infections miscarried and one out of those delivered prematurely. Premature rupture of the membranes occurred in 3 patients. The incidence of abortion, premature delivery an PROM in nontreated women was much higher than in treated women. C. trachomatis was isolated from 6 (16.2%) patients with PID. Chlamydia infections are frequently accompanied by other bacterial infections. This study indicated that chlamydia infection should be thoroughly investigated when we encounter STD or other bacterial infections, since they accompany chlamydia infection with a high incidence.
