Fruit thinning by ethephon application on oriental pears

The effect of ethephon application on fruit thinning and fruit quality in oriental pears was investigated to identify the availablity of chemical thinning. The results obtained from 1984 to 1986 were as followings. The most effective application date was 15 days after full bloom and the moderate concentration was 200 to 400 ppm, however, the more concentrate application resulted in overthinning. The fruitlets were largely abscissed from 10 to 15 days after treatment. The thinning effect was more evident at the inner part of crown and the fruit setting ratio within cluster was higher at the basal part. Ethephon application resulted in apparent thinning effect in all the cultivars tested, Chojuro, Niitaka, Okusankichi, Imamuraaki, Shinsui, and Hosui. Fruitlet growth was retarded by ethephon application, but the final fruit size at harvest was ot affected. Fruit characteristics, namely, soluble solids content, acidity, and firmness, were not affected by ethephon application, but fruit shape index was somewhat lowered.
