An oncogenic strain of Agrobacterium rhizogenes, containing the bar gene which confers resistance to the herbicide Basta, was used for transformation of an aspen hybrid (Populus tremula .times. Populus alba). From 28 to 54% of inoculated stem sections formed roots after inoculation by the bacteria according to methods of inoculation. Plants were regenerated from transformed roots. Successful genetic transformation was confirmed by enzyme assays and Southern blot analysis. Transgenic plants transferred to soil and sprayed in the greenhouse showed tolerance towards Basta.
