Genetic variation and heritability estimates of some morphological characters of eucalyptus urophylla s.t. blake

Research was conducted in the half-sib progeny test plantation of Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake grown in Subanjeriji plantation, Palembang, South Sumatera (Indonesia). This stand was planted in January 1984, and field measurements were done in January 1990 for some economically important morphological characters such as total height, clear bole height, stem diameter and bole straightness. This study is aimed at estimating the genetic variation and family heritability of each tree character. These genetic parameters estimated through variance component from analysis of variance of each tree character. Experimental design used is randomized completely block design with 10 of replications. Tree plot is line containing 4 trees for the same family with 4 mx 4 m spacing. A hundred of families originated from 14 provenance were used in this study. The genetic variation and heritability of tree height, clear bole height and bole straightness are big (wide), so genetic improvement of each tree character can be achieved through mass selection initiated in the early generation. On the other hand, the genetic variation and heritability of stem diameter is rather small (narrow), so genetic improvement of this character can be obtained through family selection in the late generation.
