During the period from April 1982 to July 1985, the freshwater crabs, Geothelphusa dehaani, collected from 20 different localities in Iga area of Mie Prefecture, were examined for metacercariae of the lung fluke, Paragonimus westermani (Kerbert, 1878) Braun, 1899. Of the 1,764 crabs studied, 424 (24.0%) harbored Paragonimus metacercariae. The infected crabs were found at 16 localities including seven in Ohyamada-mura, four in Nabari-shi, two in Iga-cho, two in Aoyama-cho, and one in Ueno-shi. The infection rate of the Paragonimus metacercariae in these 16 localities varied from 3.1 to 87.5%. A total of 2,969 metacercariae were obtained from the 424 crabs. The number of metacercariae collected from a positive crab ranged from one to 144, with an average of 7.0 per positive crab. The highest incidence (87.5%) of metacercarial infection and the largest number (18.3) of mean burden per positive crab occurred at Nenobi of Ohyamada-mura. No Paragonimus metacercaria was found in 410 crabs collected at the beginning four localities. On the basis of the morphological features of the metacercariae, as well as the adult worms and the eggs recovered from cats given the metacercariae, the lung flukes discovered in this investigation were all identified as P. westermani (Kerbert, 1878) Braun, 1899 (the diploid type of P. westermani). In the present paper, Iga area of Mie Prefecture is added as a new prevalent locality of this lung fluke in Japan.
