Germination and tetrazolium testing of treated barley seed samples from glyphosate treated crops in seven ista stations

Germination and tetrazolium testing of treated barley seed samples from glyphosate treated crops in seven ista stations

Seed Science & Technology 18(3): 641-652

The results of a comparative germination and tetrazolium trial of glyphosate treated barley samples are presented. Differences in the evauation of germination characteristics and tetrazolium viabilities between participating stations were assessed by a method derived from ISTA tolerance tables. Differences existed between stations in evaluation of seedlings as being either normal or abnormal and in the evaluation of seed as viable in the tetrazolium test. Seeds which have been killed by glyphosate can produce a tetrazolium staining pattern that enables them to be classified as viable. Glyphosate affected samples have reduced levels of seedling emergence in the field and this reduction in emergence is not compensated for by increased tillering.
